I've found the same issue with the module SMTP Authentication Support. PHPMailer uses the PHP fsockopen() function that has this known bug. Note: Obviously, and also as suggested in that wiki, this should be a temporary solution!

I'm not sure what the issue is, as I can successfully connect (and send email) by logging into server with the same email credentials set in this plugin. Edit your php.ini file and remove comma in front of openssl. Previously, PHPMailer loaded the SMTP class explicitly, and this causes problems if you want to provide your own implementation.
