So I installed the debian-package "inintramfs-tools". I was configuring default gateway several times (which is probably not relevant to the issue). I then rolled back to 2.6.30 and everything is running as normal. That way the last version is still on disk and doesn't cause bafflement when module loading is attempted after an update.
