Perhaps I'll get time to just roll another netinstall (10_GB disk, I don't need a /home anyway...), and start fresh next Monday. They are still shader model 2.0 GPUs but have some extensions beyond 2.0, which gives them a 2.0b designation, but are not 3.0 compliant. A temporary solution was presented with the ATi Graphics Ultra/Vantage cards, which combined an ATi 8514 Ultra and VGA Wonder+ into a single card (though using discrete ICs). Prepend [SOLVED] there and done.I see the problem. https://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.7/doc/ati.txt
R600 includes both the HD 2xxx and HD 3xxx series, with the AGP version of the HD 3850 arguably being the most powerful AGP graphics card to ever have been made I then installed this driver (64W95101), and that fixed this problem. But the reference to "mach64" seems to have disappeared, a fate that didn't befall either "vesa" or "fbdev".

It is competitive with GeForce 3 Ti 500. Failed To Load Module Fbdev It is also ATI's last chip with Windows 3.1x support. Ok, we still won't know why Arch requires this and Ubuntu doesn't... https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129552 The system returned: (22) Invalid argument The remote host or network may be down.
It supports environmental bump mapping (EMBM), unlike GeForce cards at the time. That way this is not of much use for others who search the forums. High resolutions may also be problematic. Radeon 9800 Pro is competitive with GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, but with Direct3D 9 games the GeForce FX falls far behind.
They have somewhat reduced specifications but are more efficient and run cooler. mach64 is definitely the right driver to use. The Mach64 moniker was eliminated with introduction of the 3D Rage Pro. Performance-wise, it is very similar to 3Dfx's original Voodoo Graphics chipset. And indeed, I don't have a /dev/fb0, Google didn't seem to be enlightening about just rolling-your-own (I don't yet know any of the methods _in Linux_ for creating device files - I reviewed Forum Etiquette before posting, but it didn't seem to have mention of BBCodes. And thank you, Gusar. Anti-aliasing is now performed with 2-6x gamma-corrected rotated-grid multi-sampling anti-aliasing.
