If anybody has any ideas what to do I would really appreciate your help as it appears that many people have this problem. In the end I think he contacted Adobe who sent him a download patch link. More to the point, you'd want to set your Virtual Memory to a fixed size, rather than a variable size (windows default).

You'll probably have to do this routine frequently until you sort things out and/or get more ram memory. Photoshop takes only a portion of the available memory and will open without a huge gob of RAM available.
